The asphalt
used by the Barber Asphalt Company was made from pitch or tar drawn from Pitch Lake in Trinidad where Amzi had obtained a 99 year lease from the British government. I believe it was the only known source of tar in the world at that time. In future years comercially viable tar was found in Venezuela and then in California. Amzi attempted to get a lease from the Venezuelan government similar to the Trinidad. Howeverver his effort was refused leading to competition is the road paving business.
The Locomoble Company built well regarded cars, but it was a loss making venture. I believe that Amzi took out large bank loans with his personal guarantee to provide necessary cash and capital. As a result upon his death Amzi's estate was found to be under water much to the surprise of my great-grandmother and his daughters. In 1908 Locomobile won The Vanderbilt Cup race on Long Island. This was a a short lived time for celebration . Today there is a Locomobile Society made of over 600 proud members who own original Locomobiles may ben seen at the antique car museum in Reno and the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I believe that LeDroit L. Barber, Amzi's only son, pre-deceased him dying in 1905. His son-in-law, my grandfather Samuel T. Davis , suceeded Amzi as President of Locomobile. Sadly Sam Davis died at the age of 40 in 1914, a great tragedy for the surviving family.

From Langdon Stevenson, San Rafael, California

Langdon Stevensonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30748084.post-70852492758902512762018-03-11T21:12:12.470-04:002018-03-11T21:12:12.470-04:00This is a good common sense blog. Ray often spoke with pride of the Pullman history of his house. Additionally Ray was an interesting and outspoken activist on many issues regarding the immediate neighborhood and had a wonderful collection of DC history in books and other items. Others may remember is was Ray who painted pointed storefront scenes on the neighboring blighted buildings in the 90's (?). Ray passed away in 2016 and will be sorely missed. thirteen14https://www.blogger.com/profile/16438120972879291087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30748084.post-9818030078255837992017-02-19T01:20:42.733-05:002017-02-19T01:20:42.733-05:00The house that was owned by James P. I lived in 1722 for 10 years, including the lot next door which the previous owner had turned into a beautiful garden- grapes, raspberries, all kinds of flowers. I and friends called it my secret garden. I was the last owner before it was renovated and the garden paved and decked over, and then later sold for 1.2M. I loved the house, although it did require a lot of upkeep and I was always worried about the tilt toward the vacant lot. As I understand it the house at 1724 burned down in the riots in the 1960s.The owner previous to me bought the lot and adjoined it to the 1722 property. I also knew much of the history. There was a small booklet produced about the Strivers' Section that told much of this. I also wish I knew how the name morphed from Seaton Place when I bought it to Seaton St. by the time I left. The street signs changed during that time.

Cathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01257754785311061536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30748084.post-65882997824598117642016-12-27T10:45:43.342-05:002016-12-27T10:45:43.342-05:00Hi

The reference to "the black lawyers" who argued the case obscures one of its most uplifting features. The clients were black but the lawyers were biracial. The team representing the black homeowners comprised Charles H. Houston (black) and Phineas Indritz (white, Jewish). Indritz was a legendary fighter for equality - and not just racial equality; he was a founding member of the National Organization for Women. A terrific portrait of "King" Hooper from circa 1767 (also by John Singleton Copley) is in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. A miniature portrait of him was a gift to the exceptionally fine collection of the U.S. State Department (given in 1979 or 1980 in honor a former Sec. of State). There may be no portrait of "King" Hooper's principal wife, Ruth, who was the mother of all 11 of their children (though there's more to that story) But a portrait (also from c.1767) of the woman whom he married in 1764, Hannah White-Cowell, was in the collection of the New York Public Library for many years. Though several of the Hoopers' children were grown (including middle son Robert, whose portrait you show -- in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's Smithsonian Art Museum), and a few were even married by 1764, several others were fairly young -- and the youngest was just short of 2 years old when the senior Hooper re-married. (The youngest, a boy, had been less than a year old when Hooper's wife died.) His new wife (age 37) had already been twice widowed (not uncommon in the Atlantic seaport), and brought to the her own son and three step-children marriage and Hooper household (since their fathers had died, and the 3 step-children were therefore orphans otherwise). The younger Robert Hooper whose portrait you show eventually married the eldest step-child, and adopted her two younger teenage siblings as his wards, to raise them until they came of age. It's a fascinating family story, in an equally fascinating town (which was the 6th largest in N.America when most of the Copley portraits were painted). J.
